The Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD) centralizes the sterile processing activities in which reusable medical supplies, devices and surgical instruments and equipment (excluding the operating room procedures) are processed and issued for diagnostic and patient care procedures. In addition, employees in CSSD are not only trained to manage efficiency, economy and patient safety but also to maintain standards for sterilization and decontamination process throughout the hospital.
The objective of establishing a Central Sterile Supply Department is to make reliable sterilized articles available at the required time and place for any agreed purpose in the hospital as economically as possible, having regard to the need to conserve the time of the users especially doctors and nurses.
Services provided by CSSD include decontamination, packaging, sterilization, distribution and releasing of sterile and non-sterile supplies for patient and clinical areas within the hospital.
OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSES
• To provide sterilized material from a central department where sterilizing practice is conducted under conditions, which are controlled, thereby contributing to a reduction in the incidence of hospital infection.
• To avoid duplication of costly equipment’s, which maybe infrequently used.
• To maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment
• To keep and released medical and non –medical supplies and equipment to patient and staff use.

OFFICE HOURS
The Central Supply Department is open is open during office hours from Monday to Friday, 8:00am-5:00pm. Lunch break of 12:00noon-1:00pm. And every Saturday and Sunday as scheduled overtime from 8:00am-5:00pm.
RELEASING OF SUPPLIES AND EQUIPMENT
• Every department who will get their supply should write to the stock request form that is being provided for them.
• Every new equipment for the requesting department should receive and sign the memorandum receipt form.
• Every new linen, beddings, scrub suits, towels and others must log to linen released logbook.
