A New Mom’s FAQs ON Breastfeeding
A NEW MOM’S FAQs ON BREASTFEEDING
By: Dr. Rebs C. Andal, Pediatrician
We commonly encounter anxious mothers after delivery asking us to prescribe milk formula so that their baby will not get hungry. Here are some points that we can share to moms who ask: “DOK, PANO YAN WALA PO AKONG GATAS???”
- It is human nature for the baby to breastfeed. God created your body to produce milk and supply enough nourishment to your little one’s needs. No formula milk can equal this precious liquid gold. Remember that the baby’s tummy is still tiny hence they feed up to 10-12 times a day giving the false impression that you are inadequately giving milk. DO NOT WORRY; you are giving the right amount. In the coming days and weeks, as your milk production increases, time intervals in between feedings also increase. Giving milk formula in this stage may only interfere with your breastfeeding success.
- Always emphasize the benefits of breast milk feeding:
- It is a complete package for your baby — proteins, fats, lactose, vitamins, iron,
minerals, water and enzymes for optimal growth and development. - lt prevents gastrointestinal infections and diarrhea
- lt decreases the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
- Breastfed babies are less prone to develop diabetes, heart disease, eczema, asthma and other allergic disorders later in life
- it enhances brain development.
- It is readily available — just the right temperature, no need for preparation, clean, bacteria-free and with anti-infective property
- It is not just food, it strengthens mother-baby bonding with warmth, love and affection. lt boosts mom’s self-esteem, confidence and worth
- And best of all, lt is FREE!
“AKALA MO LANG WALA (KANG GATAS),
PERO MERON, MERON, MERON!!!” So, best
to start the right way. Give your baby the unmatched
benefit of breast milk feeding and achieve optimal
health and development. Happy parenting!
